ABM Speech and Language Therapy Service

The Speech and Language therapy services for adults with learning Disabilities are based
in the Adult Community Support Teams. They are a specialist team of Speech and Language Therapists and Communication Development officers and work in a multi- disciplinary way liaising with other professionals.

The Speech and Language therapy service works to achieve and maintain effective
communication for the clients.

They provide a service for people from transition when leaving school and through adulthood and old age.

They provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of communication problems.
They also train carers, family and staff around communication and visual supports such as
objects , symbols, photos and signing to ensure that everyone involved with the individual is consistent with their communication. They also have an advisory role in making written
information accessible.

They also provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of eating and drinking
problems. They train others to enable them to support someone who has eating and drinking problems at mealtimes. This includes advising how to make food and liquids safer.
